The Bottom Line
'Learn to Draw and Paint' has a wealth of useful exercises for the beginner to intermediate artist. The projects offer a variety of approaches to different media, so this book would be a valuable resource for teachers. However, the title isn't quite accurate, as it only glosses over technique, so really needs to be supplemented with more technical books, particularly on watercolor and oil painting techniques.
Pros
- covers many techniques and mediums
- contributions from artists with a range of styles
- projects are interesting and varied
Cons
- glosses over basic technique

Guide Review - Learn to Draw and Paint - Review
While 'Learn to Draw and Paint' only touches on drawing skills and painting technique, I still found it worthwhile and picked up quite a few useful tips from its pages. What I like about this book is the incredible range of approach - from wiry, exploratory drawings to precise line drawings, from expressive, experimental color through to carefully rendered, gentle watercolor washes - there's something for everyone. The projects are all well illustrated, with materials lists and step-by-step instructions. Worthwhile.
